Knee Pain Q & A

What causes knee pain?

Athletic activities are one of the top causes of knee pain, but anyone can develop degenerative changes over years of doing nothing more than walking every day. Problems in your feet, hips, and lower back affect your body’s alignment and put excessive pressure on your knee, which results in pain.

The health conditions that frequently lead to knee pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Meniscus tears
  • Knee bursitis
  • Knee tendonitis
  • Runner’s knee
  • Dislocated kneecap
  • Ligament tears and sprains

Of all these conditions, one of the most common knee problems is an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

What should I know about an ACL injury?

The ACL connects your femur (thighbone) to the top of your tibia (shinbone). However, this ligament runs diagonally through the knee joint, making it responsible for rotational stability.

As a result, the ACL is susceptible to severe sprains or complete tears caused by movements such as:

  • Making a sudden stop
  • Quickly changing direction
  • Landing a jump incorrectly
  • Pivoting and sidestepping
  • Suddenly slowing down while running

If the ACL has a complete tear, most patients undergo surgery to reconstruct the ligament.

Whether or not you have surgery, full recovery from an ACL injury requires physical therapy and rehabilitation. The team at Shift Wellness specializes in ACL rehabilitation.

How is knee pain treated?

Physical therapy and rehabilitation are the primary treatments for knee pain. Depending on the underlying cause of your pain, you may also benefit from the chiropractic and functional medicine treatments available at Shift Wellness.

ACL rehabilitation

Rehabilitation for an ACL injury begins with therapy to restore normal movement to the joint and its surrounding muscles. As mobility returns, your physical therapist starts a regimen that gradually rebuilds the ligament’s strength.

The final phase of your ACL rehabilitation focuses on restoring function, so your regimen is based on your goals. If you plan to return to the game, the therapist tailors your ongoing rehabilitation to your specific sport.
