Chronic Pain Q & A

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain occurs when your pain lasts for at least three to six months or when the pain continues even after the underlying condition that started the pain heals. By comparison, acute pain begins with an injury or illness, lasts fewer than three months, and goes away when the condition heals.

What causes chronic pain?

Your chronic pain may begin as an acute injury, but many health conditions are the source of ongoing pain, including:

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Complex regional syndrome
  • Neuropathy
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Vascular disease

Post-surgery pain may also become a chronic pain condition.

How is my chronic pain treated?

The team at Shift Wellness focuses on integrative therapies to alleviate chronic pain and enhance healing. Your treatment depends on the underlying condition, the severity of your pain, and your overall health.

Your customized treatment plan incorporates the type of therapy that meets your unique needs, which may include one or more of the following:

Physical therapy

People with chronic pain often don’t get a lot of exercise. But lack of exercise creates a downward spiral in which your muscles atrophy and your pain increases.

Physical therapy begins with a structured exercise program that honors your pain while pushing you enough to rebuild your strength. Rebuilding your strength and moving your body restores your ability to function and reduces your pain.

Additionally, physical activity triggers your brain to produce endorphins, which are your body’s natural pain killers.

The team at Shift Wellness also includes specialists in yoga, Pilates, Ortho-Bionomy®, and the Feldenkrais Method®. They may be part of your physical therapy program, or you can take these movement classes separately.

Massage therapy is beneficial for chronic pain as it relaxes your muscles, stimulates circulation, and reduces inflammation. Whether you receive a relaxing Swedish massage, a deep muscle massage, or any other technique, the pressure applied to your soft tissues promotes real physiological changes in your body that promote healing and wellness.

Whether your chronic pain originates in a spine condition or elsewhere in your body, chiropractic care can help. Chiropractors use gentle techniques that realign your spine. Restoring your spine’s health improves blood flow and nerve function. Relieving pressure on spinal nerves also gives them time to heal. This improvement in nervous system functioning helps improve pain throughout your body.

Infrared sauna

Infrared light penetrates deep into your muscles and joints, where the heat relieves pain without overheating your entire body like a traditional steam sauna.

Functional medicine

Functional medicine focuses on the whole person, identifying the source of your chronic pain, and then using integrative treatments such as nutrition and supplements to support your body’s ability to heal.
