About Heather

Heather Mims, PT, DPT, OCS, NCPT, has more than two decades of experience as a dancer and choreographer, along with over a decade of experience practicing yoga and teaching Pilates. She applies her knowledge of breath work, core strength, and somatic awareness to her practice at Shift Wellness in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City.

Heather earned a BFA in Dance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before earning her MFA in dance at Ohio State University in Columbus. She then earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Hunter College in New York City. Heather is particularly interested in the role of posture, proximal hip strength, and core strength to prevent injury in runners, dancers, yogis, and athletes. She is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor, HSS Rehabilitation Advanced Hip Clinician, and Assistant Teaching Artist with Dance for PD, the Mark Morris Dance Center's flagship program serving members of the NYC community living with Parkinson's Disease.

As a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher, Heather offers a Pilates-based approach to physical therapy rehabilitation and wellness. Her practice is also informed by her many years of teaching dance and creative movement. Heather blends the mind-body awareness, conscious control, and focus emphasized in the Pilates Method with hands-on manual therapy techniques. These methods release myofascial and joint restrictions to allow each patient to discover greater freedom of movement, healthier biomechanics, and functional stability.
