When to Consider Chiropractic Care for Joint Pain

At Shift Wellness, our team believes that in order to function optimally, all of the parts of your body need to be working in harmony. Our staff includes physical therapists, massage therapists, medical doctors, and chiropractors. That’s because each of those specialties is important to your overall good health.

One common misconception is that chiropractic care is just for your neck and spine. However, if you’re experiencing joint pain, you may benefit from chiropractic care more than you realize. If your joints hurt, Dr. Joseph Caraccilo may be able to help.

Connected bones

Your musculoskeletal system is made up of your bones, the soft tissues that connect and lubricate them, and the muscles that support them. Each of your joints is a meeting of bones. For example, your knee joint connects the bones of your lower leg with the femur in your upper leg.

In addition to connecting the different parts of your skeleton, your joints also give you an amazing range of motion. But in order for your knee to bend without excruciating pain, the joint must be properly aligned and lubricated.

When you have joint pain, it could be caused by any number of problems. The tendons that hold your bones together may have stretched too far, leaving your joint unstable. The processes that lubricate your joint may not be working properly, allowing your bones to rub against each other.

Sometimes, joint pain is a result of an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, where your body’s immune system mistakenly attacks your joints and causes damage. It may also be a result of simple wear-and-tear — over time, all the structures that make up your joints begin to wear out.

How chiropractic care can help

Chiropractic care keeps your bones aligned, so they can move as they’re supposed to. If, for example, your hip is slightly out of alignment, it can cause pain in your ankle or knee. The first step in addressing joint pain is making sure all of your bones are just where they need to be for proper, optimal function.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a specific underlying condition, such as a form of arthritis, or an overuse injury like tendonitis, chiropractic care may be a way to ease your pain without the need for pharmaceutical pain relievers.

There is also some evidence that chiropractic care can improve the function of your immune system, which could be helpful if you have an autoimmune disorder.

There’s almost no risk

Unlike the majority of methods used for joint pain relief, with chiropractic care there’s almost no risk. It’s a safe form of care. Unlike with opioids, there’s no risk of addiction, and the only possible side effect might be some slight soreness right after your treatment.

If you think of chiropractic care as having your bones “cracked,” you may be surprised to learn that many manipulations are quite gentle, and especially so with fragile joints.
